WHEN TO SEEK URGENT CARE

What Is a Dental Emergency?

A dental emergency is any oral health situation that requires immediate professional attention to relieve severe pain, stop ongoing bleeding, save a tooth, or treat an infection that could spread. Unlike routine dental issues that can wait for a scheduled appointment, dental emergencies demand prompt care — often within hours — to achieve the best possible outcome.

At Oakridge Park Dental, dental emergencies are stressful and often happen at the worst possible time. That's why we reserve dedicated time slots every day for emergency patients at our Vancouver dental clinic. Our team is ready to provide compassionate, expert emergency dental care.

Our experienced dentists — Dr. Amad Chaudhry, Dr. Scarlett Yoo, Dr. Noa Albanese, and Dr. Marcy Schwartzman — have decades of combined experience treating every type of dental emergency, from severe toothaches and infections to traumatic injuries and broken teeth.

CONDITIONS WE TREAT

Common Dental Emergencies We Treat in Vancouver

Our Vancouver emergency dental team is equipped to diagnose and treat a wide range of urgent dental conditions on the same day.

Severe Toothache

Persistent, throbbing tooth pain that doesn't respond to over-the-counter painkillers may indicate an infection, abscess, or advanced decay. Early treatment prevents it from getting worse — early treatment can save the tooth and prevent the infection from spreading.

Treatment: Diagnosis with digital X-rays, followed by appropriate treatment such as a filling, root canal treatment, or extraction depending on the cause.

Broken, Cracked, or Chipped Tooth

Whether from biting down on something hard, a sports injury, or an accident, a broken tooth needs prompt attention. Even a small crack can allow bacteria to enter the tooth's inner pulp, leading to infection and potentially tooth loss.

Treatment: Minor chips may be repaired with composite bonding. Larger fractures may require a dental crown, veneer, or root canal therapy depending on the extent of damage.

Knocked-Out Tooth (Avulsed Tooth)

A completely knocked-out permanent tooth is one of the most time-sensitive dental emergencies. With prompt action, the tooth can often be successfully reimplanted. The key is getting to a dentist within 30 to 60 minutes while keeping the tooth moist.

Treatment: Reimplantation of the natural tooth when possible, followed by splinting and monitoring. If reimplantation isn't viable, we'll discuss replacement options including dental implants.

Dental Abscess or Infection

A dental abscess is a pocket of pus caused by a bacterial infection. Symptoms include severe throbbing pain, swelling in the face or jaw, fever, a bad taste in the mouth, and sensitivity to hot and cold. Left untreated, a dental infection can spread to other parts of the body and become life-threatening.

Treatment: Drainage of the abscess, antibiotic therapy, and treatment of the underlying cause — typically a root canal or extraction. Early intervention is critical.

Lost Filling or Crown

A lost filling or crown exposes the underlying tooth structure, which can be sensitive and vulnerable to further decay or fracture. While not always painful immediately, it should be treated promptly to avoid complications.

Treatment: Replacement of the filling or crown, often in a single visit. If the underlying tooth has deteriorated, additional treatment such as a new crown or onlay may be recommended.

Soft Tissue Injuries & Bleeding

Cuts, lacerations, or puncture wounds to the gums, tongue, lips, or cheeks from falls, accidents, or biting injuries can cause significant bleeding and pain. While many minor cuts heal on their own, deeper wounds may need professional treatment.

Treatment: Cleaning and assessment of the wound, sutures if needed, and monitoring for infection. We'll also check for any damage to nearby teeth.

PREVENTION TIPS

How to Prevent Dental Emergencies

While not all dental emergencies can be avoided, many can be prevented with good oral hygiene habits and protective measures. Here are evidence-based tips from our Vancouver dental team to help you reduce your risk:

  • Maintain regular dental check-ups and cleanings every six months. Routine exams catch small problems before they become emergencies.
  • Brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste and floss at least once a day to prevent cavities and gum disease.
  • Wear a custom-fitted mouthguard during contact sports and recreational activities. Ask us about our custom nightguards and TMJ appliances.
  • Avoid chewing on hard objects like ice, popcorn kernels, hard candy, and pen caps, which can crack or chip teeth.
  • If you grind your teeth at night (bruxism), talk to us about a custom nightguard to protect your teeth from wear and fracture.
  • Don't use your teeth as tools to open packages, bottles, or tear tape — this is a common cause of chipped and broken teeth.
  • Address dental problems early. A small cavity that's ignored can turn into a painful infection requiring emergency root canal treatment.

Time is critical — a knocked-out permanent tooth can often be saved if reimplanted within 30 to 60 minutes. Pick up the tooth by the crown (the white part), not the root. If it's dirty, gently rinse it with milk or saline — do not scrub it or use soap. Try to place the tooth back in the socket and bite down gently on a clean cloth. If you can't reinsert it, keep it moist in a cup of milk or your own saliva. Then call us immediately at 604-266-5313 or come directly to our Oakridge Mall location.

The cost of emergency dental care depends on the type of treatment needed. We follow the BC Dental Fee Guide so our pricing is always fair and transparent. Rinse your mouth with warm salt water (half a teaspoon of salt in 8 ounces of water) to reduce bacteria and soothe irritation. Take over-the-counter pain relief such as ibuprofen (Advil) as directed — avoid placing aspirin directly on the gum as it can cause burns. Apply a cold compress to the outside of your cheek for 15 minutes on, 15 minutes off to reduce swelling. Avoid very hot, cold, or sugary foods. Then call us to schedule an emergency appointment as soon as possible.

Yes, a broken, cracked, or chipped tooth should be treated as a dental emergency, especially if it's causing pain, has sharp edges cutting your tongue or cheek, or exposes the inner pulp of the tooth. Rinse your mouth with warm water, apply gauze to any bleeding, and use a cold compress on the outside of your face. Save any tooth fragments and bring them to your appointment. Depending on the severity, treatment may include dental bonding, a crown, a veneer, or in some cases a root canal.

Our regular office hours are Monday through Thursday 8 AM to 5 PM, Friday 8 AM to 4 PM, and Saturday 9 AM to 2 PM. We accommodate emergency patients during these hours on a priority basis.
